QUEEN OF THE FUCKING SIDEWALK

A young woman recently told me about a time where she was followed down the street by a man, who screamed at her that she "thought she was queen of the fucking sidewalk" because she ignored his advances. The more I spoke with women, the more I realized each had their own story of harassment.

In response, I created a disruptive sound installation and zine to draw awareness to the issue of street harassment. I used Arduino boards to create a wireless motion detector that fits into the sidewalk. Transmitters trigger a nearby speaker to play a recording when the device is passed by. The recording is a compilation of catcalls women submitted to me, and are presented in a computerized, objective voice. I then created a zine with stills from the intervention footage, as well as accounts from women about their memories of harassment.

The zine is saddle stitched, printed on French Paper Construction 70 lb Grout Grey with a
Neenah Astrobright 110 lb cover stock.
